Alternative tourism

Abstract

This paper defines the scope, purpose and rationale of alternative tourism (AT) — a form of tourism in which the client receives accommodation in the home of the host. AT appears to offer a range of social and economic opportunities, particularly for the developing countries. The aims and methods of a research project into AT potential are specified, and the preliminary research results are reported.
