Abstract

The concept of agency, in its general sense, reminds to one of the most important qualities of the human being: the capability of act intentionally and therefore, to achieve goals or purposes guided by reason. The objective of this paper is to retrieve and analyze in an exploratory way the main theoretical sources that contributed to the definition of this construct; among others, contributions of Philosophy of Action, Neuropsychology and Cognitive Psychology are retrieved in order to value the semantic richness of the term agency and its diverse definitions and components. The result of this analysis leads to the reflection of the agency phenomenology and the profitability of its application to the educative environment, as one of the most interesting and promising novelties of the recent years.
