Abstract

The aim of this work, through poetics, is to show that Victoria Cruz's poetry reveals the need to confront the reality of what it means to be Black and to positivise it. Indeed, this study underlines the impact of ethno-racial discrimination which can induce a physical change and have a negative effect on the mind of its victim. This discrimination is experienced by minority classes, in this case by blacks in Latin America in general and in Peru in particular. Faced with this ideology of supremacy, which has its sources in the Spanish conquest and colonisation of Latin American countries, the victims, after undergoing a change in their physique to make themselves accepted, realise that no matter how much they change their skin or physique, they will always continue to be discriminated against, that the only option left to them is to become aware of who they are and accept themselves as such as well as claim their culture identity and value them accordingly.
