The majority of available surfactants are synthesized from petroleum derivatives. However, environmental laws have motivated the development of natural surfactants as an alternative to existing products. Biosurfactants can be obtained from microorganisms and plants. Biodegradable detergents can also be obtained through chemical synthesis.
