Abstract

Weak partial discharge detection can be used to assess the insulation performance of high-voltage electrical devices. Optical detection technology featuring photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) enables the detection of weak discharge in high-voltage electrical equipment by detecting the light radiation generated during the discharging period. The paper reviews the principle of the detection of weak discharge based on PMTs and introduces details of the research in optical detection technology of weak discharge recently. Finally, this paper also summarizes the potential problems in the application of PMTs and possible prospects of this technology.
