A fearsome fighter, he was also known for his love of poetry (sometimes of dubious quality) and support for the black emancipation movement in the USA, conversion to Islam and continuous presence on the world stage throughout a long and difficult fight with Parkinson’s disease. Despite his reportedly low IQ, having scored 78 on a US army recruitment test, Ali remarked “I said I was the greatest, not the smartest”.
