An excavation rating system is proposed utilizing some rock mass and material properties which influence excavation performances; namely, uniaxial compressive strength, hardness, discontinuity spacing, degree of weathering and seismic wave velocity. The work was carried out in operating Turkish surface lignite mines. Abstract
