Abstract

: Currently, memes are often used to convey various information in various dimensions, ranging from conveying aspirations, criticism, ideology, and even history. One that consistently produces historical memes is Neo Historia Indonesia, a Facebook fan page containing memes with a vision to introduce history in a fun approach. The objectives of this research are 1) to examine the phenomenon of Historical Memes as popular culture in Indonesia; 2) to examine the role of Neo Historia Indonesia in the discourse of building historical awareness; 3) to compile criteria for Historical Memes that have the potential to build historical awareness, and 4) explore the benefits of historical Memes as digital content. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. In collecting data, this research uses interviews, observation, and documentation techniques. This study finds that Historical Memes in Neo Historia Indonesia, as a popular culture, have the potential to build historical awareness. This is because the Historical Memes in Neo Historia Indonesia interestingly convey historical content. Thus, Historical Memes can be an effective medium for conveying messages about historical content, especially for young people.
