Abstract

A Portuguese cultural manifestation with a long tradition, the Zés Pereiraslanded in Rio de Janeiro, around the middle of the 19th century, along with the massive immigration of Portuguese to Brazil. The Zés Pereiras played a fundamental role in the Carioca Carnival for at least 60 years (1850-1910) and are considered by Brazilian historiography to be the forerunners of the streetand popularCarnival in the country.
