Abstract

The carbonyl compounds especially methylenecompounds exhibit a substitution oxidation, addition etc. types of reactions through enol and enolate in formation because of existence of keto-enol equilibrium, depending on the nature of solvents, resonance and hydrogen bonding. In these compounds the –CH2group is sandwiched between two electron attracting > C = O groups, being highly acidic, enolize rapidly 1 and is stabilized by resonance.
