Workers' housing estates, in Mulhouse in particular, formed, in the nineteenth century, the subject of medical thesis. Why did Doctor A. B. Bertele choose this subject ? He was aware of the great changes in urban environment, of an increasing poverty due to the industrial revolution and of the difficulty of practising medecine. Doctor Bertele was a forerunner in the field of public health and medical sociology.
