Because the impedance near band-edge becomes so great that strong interaction can occur. The concept of SWSBO has been successfully demonstrated experimentally using folded waveguide SWS. Abstract

Vacuum electron devices are key devices for many applications due to their high frequency and high power characteristics. To exploit the frequency above 100GHz, a SWS band-edge oscillator (SWSBO) is proposed for a compact source of high-power radiation based on interaction in the region near band-edge of SWS.
