A new scheme based on cross-sectional imaging during MSCT has been developed by the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group (ITMIG) and adopted as the standard. Abstract

The division of the mediastinum into specific departments is necessary for targeted differential diagnosis of mediastinal masses in imaging studies and planning biopsies and surgical procedures. The majority of radiological classifications are based on arbitrary marks that are conventionally labeled on a lateral chest radiograph. At present, the use of multislice computed tomography (MSCT) with a wide range of post-processing of axial tomographic images has become the gold standard for visualization of diseases of the chest organs.
