Practice makes perfect, right? No! Too often, practicing not only falls short of resulting in progress; it can actually get in the way of a desired result. There unfortunately are many reasons for such lack of progress, but all of them can be remedied. The variables affecting effective practice should all be in the teacher’s mind and pedagogical choices adjusted for each. Here, the variable of individual lessons are addressed first to confront some of the most fundamental problems and then to consider some useful strategies for group lessons.
