Abstract

Concerns about the role of the image in today’s society and the observation of its preponderance in the relationships between individuals are the starting point for a reflection on the relationship of blind people with photography. How does an image generated by a blind photographer fits into the contemporary imagery world? In this article I analyze the catalog of the exhibition “Sight Unseen”, which presented the work of twelve blind photographers. I try to understand how the images of these photographers are presented and the arguments involved in the contextualization of their artistic work. I evaluate how their works mobilize the notions of sight and gaze that permeate the universe of the image and what kind ofdestabilization are raised around these concepts. Finally, I reflect on what the images generated by blind photographers teach us about visuality and our ways of seeing.
