Abstract

The current issue of the Central European Journal of Geosciences contains several papers devoted to advances in remote sensing and geo-information for the environment. This is the first topical issue in this field published in the journal. This special issue presents selected papers from the ‘First International Conference on Remote Sensing and Geoinformation of Environment-RSCy2013’ which took place in Paphos-Cyprus April 8-10, 2013. The RSCy2013 conference was organized by the Cyprus University of Technology and the Cyprus Remote Sensing Society and co-organized by the European Space Agency (ESA), the Cyprus Scientific Chamber of Engineers-ETEK, the Cyprus Meteorological Service, the Agricultural Research Institute and Frederick University. We hope this special issue will play a valuable role in attracting more attention to integrate both remote sensing and geo-information for the effective management and monitoring of the environment. Indeed the true highlight of RSCy2013 was the integration of earth observation, GIS, and field techniques for the systematic monitoring of the human, physical and built environment. RSCy2013 was a very successful conference with 150 participants from 35 different countries. The editorial team of the conference consisted of: Professor D.G. Hadjimitsis, Dr K. Themistocleous, Dr G. Papadavid and Dr Silas Michaelides. We want to express our appreciation to the authors and reviewers of the papers in this issue.
