Abstract

Em 1927, Henri Focillon (1881-1943), historiador da arte francês, publica em Paris o livro La peinture au XIXe siècle: le retour à l’antique, le Romantisme, seguido, no ano seguinte, por La peinture au XIXe et XXe siècles: Du Reálisme à nos jours. Os volumes, editado por H. Laurens, integravam a série Manuels d’Histoire de l’Art, sob direção de Henry Marcel, antigo diretor dos Museus Nacionais de França. A coleção tinha por objetivo “retraçar, em uma série de obras distintas, a história e a evolução de cada forma de arte”, das “origens” ao século XX. A tradução em português a seguir apresenta ao leitor a introdução do primeiro volume de Focillon, em que ele define as chaves para a compreensão da arte do século XIX.

期刊介绍： The Journal of the Center for the History of Society and Culture is an annual scientific journal written in Portuguese. Its articles are subjected to a preliminary assessment carried out by an external arbitration committee. This journal was founded in 2001 with the main goal of publicizing the historical studies developed within the scope of the Center for the History of Society and Culture, an R&D unit registered with the Foundation for Science and Technology. The journal’s contents include unpublished historical texts (from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Age), a news section on scientific activities and critical reviews of books in the field of History. The journal accepts articles from full researchers and collaborators of the Center for the History of Society and Culture, as well as from any other historians from outside this institution. Special encouragement is made to the participation of all those who, in one way or another, cooperate or develop networking activities with this Research Center.
