Abstract
On 8 August 1999 Mr Tito Mboweni became the eighth governor of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB). This constituted a major break with tradition. The previous governors had all been experienced bankers, either outside or inside the SARB, before becoming governor. By contrast, Mboweni, essentially a politician, only served a year's "apprenticeship" at the SARB prior to assuming office. This article traces the profiles of the governors and deputy governors of the SARB from 1921 to 2001.
