The great advantage of Information Technology is the ability to store and process great masses of information rapidly and efficiently. The possibilities to retrieve information depends on how the information is stored and on the programs being used for the retrieval. Computer sciences have been used within art history research for about 20 years, but it is only recently that this co‐operation has emerged to a considerable extent. Some lonely pioneers within art history research have made advanced use of computers for a long time, before the rest of the community reluctantly followed when computers were introduced on large scale by the implementation of word processing.
