Abstract
A review of experimental work on A cation size effects in perovskites such as AMnO3 CMR materials, A2CuO4 and ABa2Cu3O7−x superconductors and ATiO3 ferroelectrics is presented. These show that the mean A cation radius and cation size variance are both important parameters that control properties. These parameters can be used to construct global phase diagrams for perovskites. A simple model is proposed to account for the dependences of transition temperatures upon these functionals.
