Structural and Functional Diseases of the Equine Brain

Abstract

Structural and functional diseases of the equine brain may cause a variety of clinical signs depending on both the cause and the precise location of the disease in the brain. Signs of behavioral abnormality and central blindness are two of the more common signs. Structural disorders are most common in adults, whereas a greater number of functional diseases occur in foals. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are of great diagnostic value for structural diseases. Treatment and prognosis vary considerably depending on the specific cause of the brain disease.
