Hypoglycemia in Infants and Children

Abstract

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CLINICAL PROBLEM Hypoglycemia is a medical emergency in infants and children and if untreated it can result in seizures, permanent brain damage, or even death. Hypoglycemia can be the presenting sign of a large list of disorders, which includes from transient forms to permanent hypoglycemia disorders due to endocrine or metabolic diseases. Therefore, a systematic diagnostic approach to establish the underlying cause of the hypoglycemia is necessary for implementing specific treatments to avoid the consequences of recurrent episodes of hypoglycemia.
