Abstract

The relative densities of 283 samples of Mediterranean Sea waters collected near Gibraltar were measured at 25°C with a vibrating densimeter. The measured densities agree on the average to ±3.9 × 10−6 g cm−3 with those predicted from the equation of state of Millero, Gonzalez and Ward (Journal of Marine Research, 34, 61–93, 1976). The densities and conductivity salinities of weight diluted Mediterranean waters have also been determined. These results agree on the average to ±2 × 10−6 g cm−3 in density, and ±0.003% in salinity with our earlier measurements on standard seawater. These results indicate that Mediterranean Sea waters have the same physical chemical properties as evaporated standard seawater at the same conductivity salinity.
