Abstract

Electrolytic co-deposition has been evaluated as a process to determine whether it can produce metal/ceramic composite coatings which will control high temperature wear. Of the various metal/ceramic combinations examined, a coating comprised of a cobalt matrix with chromium carbide inclusions was found to meet the required specification. The major aspects connected with the application of plated coatings to aero-engine parts have been investigated for this material combination and each requirement has been met. Comparative wear test data for the electrodeposited composite coatings is included, both against themselves and against other materials.
