New and Novel Treatments for Gynecologic Cancer

Abstract

The past decade has shepherded many advances in the clinical management of gynecologic cancers. Herein, we are very pleased to present a series of manuscripts that address the seminal “Advances in theManagement of Gynecological Cancers” to date. Our goal is to convey how new technologies, research and science have been incorporated in the daily treatment of women’s cancers and the evidence supporting these new practices. Doctors Bender, Lyons, Ghoniem, and Kumar present a series of articles addressing how minimally invasive surgery, individualized approaches, and cutting-edge selection methods are decreasing the impact and complications from cancer surgery whilemaintaining oncologic goals and optimal outcomes. Dr Bender details new applications of robotic surgery in gynecologic cancer, as does Dr Lyons who describes new techniques in laparoscopy. They explain new minimally invasive techniques and present evidence from recent clinical trials. DrGhoniem details how the introduction of clinical algorithms to optimize the application of sentinel biopsies in the staging of gynecologic malignancies is impacting the individualized surgical treatment. Likewise, Dr Kumar presents validated patient selection methods to optimize outcomes in complex ovarian cancer surgery.
