Abstract
Field experience of butt welded thermoplastic pipe systems has shown the need to take fatigue into consideration when making design calculations. Some details of the effect of fatigue on the service life of thermoplastic pipe systems, particularly those fabricated with butt welded joints, are given. Provided additional safety factors are introduced into the design calculation to allow for the reduction in service life of the system due to fatigue, creep data can be used as the basis for design. The importance of the morphology of the weld in minimising the effects of fatigue on the service life of the thermoplastic weld is discussed and details of the type of structure in polypropylene butt welds which can lead to ‘knife-line’ fatigue cracking are given.
