Presented at the American Academy of Psychoanalysis, 43rd Winter Meeting, New York City, January 6–9, 2000. † In the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, Orpheus is literally torn to shreds, and all that remains is the head of Orpheus, a fragmented intelligence, which was then enshrined and revered as a wise oracle in the ancient world. I suspect Ferenczi and Severn named Severn’s intelligence “Orpha” based on this myth.
