Abstract

Increasing amount of variable energy resources are believed to displace conventional thermal power plants. The Nordic region has a large share of hydropower production and good interconnection between the countries. This paper investigates the effect of interconnection limitations and variable wind generation to the thermal power plants and to the electricity price in Estonia. Two periods, one with low consumption and another with higher consumption were analyzed. The results of this paper indicate that with the current amount of wind installed, the effect to the thermal power plants from variable wind generation is not significant.
