Collection development for government map collections

Abstract

Of the maps produced worldwide 80% are published by government agencies. In developing a map collection the librarian faces problems very different from those involved in developing a documents or book collection. This article reviews those problems, and suggests a methodology for use in developing the map collection. The method suggested involves a careful analysis of the information needs of the institution and community, and an equally careful, and quantifiable analysis of the map collection proposed to meet those needs.
