Abstract
This paper looks at the design, modelling, building and testing aspects of a laminated rotor high-speed induction machine for an automotive application. Using a multi-domain design environment which puts equal weight on the electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical aspects, a design algorithm is developed which increases the power density of an existing high speed induction machine. An FEA technique to calculate the effect of closed rotor slots on rotor leakage inductance is presented. The 10kW, 80000rpm machine is prototyped and tested on an instrumented rig, with the experimental results compared to those obtained analytically.
