Abstract
The evolution of the contemporary theory for the formation and chemical modification of the aluminum–silicon eutectic is reviewed. The work of Hellawell et al., which laid the foundation for the present day understanding of this technologically important reaction, is critically examined and certain inconsistencies are shown to exist between the contemporary theory and more current concepts.
