Abstract
Over the past decades, Doppler ultrasound of the lower limbs has become a method of choice for diagnostic and management of venous thromboembolic disease (VTED). Patient selection is based on clinical data and D-dimer test criteria. The ultrasound examination is perfomed by a well- trained specialist allowing the identification of thrombosis when present (sensitivity and specificity close to 95%), as well as its origin in some patients. In several cases, the Doppler ultrasound may detect another disease likely to play a role in the symptomatology. Vital prognosis greatly depends on rapid management and the importance of potential persistent thrombosis sequels.
