We seem somehow to have survived the spate of awful books on the history of apocalypticism that were rushed into print to catch the market wave of the late 1990s. Serious scholarship of lasting value was not crowded out entirely, and, in some ways, it may even have beneated from the rising tide of popular interest in end-time themes. Yet it was depressing to see scholars who had little or no business in this aeld coming out with surveys of prophecy, apocalypticism, or millenarianism. Fortunately, several studies of high quality have appeared since the turn to 2000; in general, the need to levy charges of fad-driven haste has declined considerably.
