Gorgons and Ghosts: Exiting the Underworld in Homer and Virgil

Abstract

: Close study of the close of the underworld passages in both Homer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid reveals the influence of Homer’s Gorgon imagery on Virgil’s depiction of his hero’s infernal exploits, and helps to illustrate a new interpretation for the enigma of the Ivory Gate.
