Digitalne tehnologije omogućile su stvaranje arhiva elektroničkih radova. Tako su ovi naučni repozitoriji postali javno dostupni u režimu otvorenog pristupa. Open access uključuje slobodan i univerzalan pristup i korištenje informacijskog sadržaja baza podataka i drugih digitalnih resursa na internetu. Da bi se zaštitili interesi nositelja autorskih prava radova koji su u režimu otvorenog pristupa, morale su biti unesene mnoge inovacije u zakon o autorskim pravima.
