Abstract

Following a Public History approach, the aim is to analyse the questions that historians have to face when dealing with a public, i.e. secondary school classes, which, on the one hand, do not have the necessary prerequisites to understand complex contents such as those developed in the academia and, on the other hand, are not interested in mere historical learning. The article then examines the creation, and partly the development, of a historical narrative that, through the instrument of the didactic workshop, focuses on some of the most widespread stereotypes and prejudices towards Otherness that contribute to classify it in a discriminatory way. The comparison between contemporary media and late antique sources is intended to encourage a discussion on today’s integration problems, especially those narratives that refer to the Other as Barbarian.
