Abstract
Objective: Evaluate the effect of Tropaeolum tuberosum against benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and compared with finasteride. Methods: Experimental research. 30 male Holtzman rats aged 12 weeks, were randomized and assigned to six groups: white group ; testosterone group, fi nasteride group (0.33mg/kg/rat) and three dose groups, dose 1 (300mg/kg / rat), dose 2 (500mg/kg/rat) and dose 3 (800mg/kg/rata) treated with lyophilized of Tropaeolum tuberosum. A baseline volume prostate measurement by transabdominal ultrasound was performed. The induction of BPH was performed with testosterone enanthate (0.083 mg / kg / rat) in the dose, finasteride and testosterone groups, the day one and seven. At the same time lyophililized of Tropaeolum tuberosum and finasteride were administered for 21 days. For diagnosis was performed imaging and histological analysis. Results: The imaging study, in relation to prostate volume increase, no significant difference between doses 2 and finas teride was found, while in relation to the echogenicity, showed qualitative similarity dose 3 to finasteride. In the histopathological analysis, dose 3 was similar quantitatively to finasteride. Conclusions: Hyperplasia showed decreased histopathological and imaging study; however, none of the doses show benefit over finasteride.
