Abstract

This study presents the use and knowledge of medicinal herbs as a lay practice legitimized by academic disciplines (botany, pharmacology, medicine) in the period from the first half of the 19th century to 1990. Chronologically, this trend existed parallel to the "folk" and "alternative" medical systems, albeit in terms of its nature it followed a separate trend. The purpose of this study is to review the main determinants through their historical and thematic junctions and finally try to determine the nature of the spreading of herbal knowledge as well.
