Abstract

In order to explore the variations of carbon components[including organic carbon (OC) and element carbon (EC)] in PM2.5 at the urban area of Nanjing during the breakout of COVID-19 period, PM2.5, OC and EC mass concentrations were measured by online monitoring from January to February 2020. Compared to the concentrations before the emergency response, the PM2.5 concentration after the emergency response was reduced by 41.2% and EC reduced by 57.9%. These results indicate that the shutdown significantly reduced PM2.5 and EC concentrations, but the OC concentration increased. Before the emergency response, the OC and EC concentrations were low in daytime and high at night and early morning. After the emergency response, the average concentration of EC only had a slight change within a day and maintained at low concentration level, OC showed a curve trend which was higher in the afternoon and lower in morning and evening. The significant decrease of PM2.5 concentration after the emergency response period led to the increasing of light radiation intensity, which promoted the formation of secondary organic carbon (SOC). The SOC concentration increased when the PM2.5 and EC concentrations decreased, and the correlation between OC and EC also decreased significantly. © 2021, China Environmental Science Press.

Journal of Ecology and Rural Environment is a national academic journal supervised by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and sponsored by the Nanjing Institute of Environmental Science of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. Founded in 1985, it is openly circulated in the form of a monthly journal. The journal is dedicated to reporting the innovative achievements in the field of ecology and rural environmental protection in a timely manner, and has become an important platform for academic exchanges in this field. As a journal included in the Chinese Core Journals List, as well as the core journals of China Science Citation Database (CSCD) and Research Report on the Evaluation of China's Academic Journals (RCCSE), it has been widely included in a number of important databases both at home and abroad, such as CNKI-CAJD, COJ, CSTPCD, Wanfang, and Wipro, etc., as well as the internationally renowned BP, BIOSIS, CA, CAB ABSTRACTS, CABI, EBSCO, GEOBASE, SCOPUS and so on. The main columns of the Journal of Ecology and Rural Environment include Research Reports, Research Briefs, Research Methods, Monographs and Reviews, Academic Discussions and Suggestions, etc., covering a wide range of areas including Regional Environment and Development, Nature Conservation and Ecology, Pollution Control and Remediation, etc., which provide valuable information resources and academic support for researchers, educators and policy makers in related fields. The journal has won a number of honours, including National Outstanding Environmental Science and Technology Journal, Jiangsu Outstanding Journal, Jiangsu ‘Top Ten Science and Technology Journals’, etc., and has certain influence and authority in the academic circle.
