Abstract

: Transportation and energy are crucial for the social development and evolution of civilization. The energization of transportation infrastructure assets and the clean transformation of transportation energies are effective decarbonization strategies for solving severe challenges such as resource shortage, climate change, and environmental pollution. This study first reviews the integration history of road transportation and energy and investigates the demand for and trends in national energy security, clean transformation of the energy supply, energization potential of transportation infrastructure assets, and intelligization of transportation. A pathway for integrating road transportation with the energy sector in China is proposed based on an assessment of the available wind and solar resources and the self-consistent supply capacity of energies within road transportation. Moreover, a roadmap for integrating road transportation with renewable energies is proposed by considering the carbon peak and neutralization targets. Finally, we propose two strategies to achieve these goals. First, China should enhance technology research, innovation, development, and integration, as well as improve the industry chain. Additionally, the government should provide policies for improving top-level design and strategic planning to exploit new market modes and strengthen international cooperation.
