Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the demo- lition of sports venues on sports culture and collective memory. Recently demolished sports venues were identified, and one of them was selected as a case. Sports venues, which are significant urban landmarks due to their architectural features, lead urban life through sports and other activities. This study examined the issue in question and evaluated the general situ- ation within the context of the city of Trabzon. This study also pointed out the roles that sports venues played in the urban life of Trabzon, and the meanings they were attributed, and the effect of their demolition. First, a literature review was con- ducted to determine the duties and meanings of the sports venues in the city. Second, a survey was conducted to determine the effect of their demolition. The results show that although the sports venues are extremely important for urban identity and collective memory, their values are underappreciated, and therefore, their demolition is a great loss. The demolition of those structures has negative effects on the city and its dwell-ers. In conclusion, cities are rapidly changing and resembling each other. Therefore, urban values should be preserved in or-der to maintain urban identity, to preserve the sense of belong- ing, and to prevent alienation. We believe that sports venues should survive with similar functions to preserve urban life and sports culture and to reduce the impact of demolition on city and its dwellers.
