We aimed to study floristic and morphologically the species of the basal subfamilies Anomochlooideae and Pharoideae (Poaceae) occurring in the Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (PERD), the largest remnant of the Atlantic Rainforest in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Monthly expeditions to collect botanical material were carried out over 15 months (February to June 1998, and March 1999 to February 2000) along previously established trails. After the identification, voucher specimens were deposited in the PERD and VIC Herbaria. Analytical keys and diagnostic descriptions for all collected genera and species are presented, as well as data about the geographical distribution of the species. In addition, major diagnostic characters are illustrated. As a result, two genera and five species were collected.
