Abstract
Advanced grinding processes require slotted grinding wheels that can rotate at exceptionally high speeds without distorting or failing catastrophically. These wheels are usually reinforced and the grinding medium is usually attached to the periphery of the wheel using a strong bonding agent such as an epoxy adhesive. The paper uses procedures that were developed for designing grinding wheels for creep feed grinding processes and the more modern process of high efficiency deep grinding (HEDG). The grinding wheel is normally attached to the machine tool spindle so that it does not become loose, which would otherwise cause harm to the operator and to the machine tool structure itself. Procedures for safe practice and good mechanical design safety at very high rotational speeds are discussed when applied to high speed grinding processes such as HEDG grinding and VIPER grinding.
