Antinomies of 'Culture'

Abstract

This section contains a list of terms and concepts that occur in this book titled Culture, science, society: the constitution of cultural modernity . The essays in this volume have been written throughout a rather longish period of time - nearly forty years. On the background of such an underlying unity the essays in this volume clearly fall into two different groups. The first part of these writings attempts to address the difficulties and strains of our notion of high culture directly, but they deal primarily with the cognitive constituents of its idea, i.e. with science and philosophy. The problems connected with the idea and with the past and present practices of high art are primarily addressed by the essays constituting the second part of this collection (though some of them continue the discussion of the more general questions related to the idea of high culture).Keywords: cultural modernity; society
