Abstract

As students, they were taught and mentored by some of the leading artists of the time. In succeeding decades, works by African Americans increasingly reflected various approaches and styles prevalent in American art, such as abstraction, the use of nontraditional materials to create fine art, the reconsideration of the figure, and the expression of a wide range of interests through choice of subject matter, which was not always about race.
