With the advent of the HIV epidemic, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) has become a frequently diagnosed life-threatening opportunistic infection and the most common identifiable cause of death in the AIDS patient population. Prompt diagnosis, current treatment modalities, and focused care can substantially improve the prognosis of the patient with PCP.
