HIV-Infected Women in Louisiana

Abstract

Although women constitute the fastest growing HIV-infected population, their needs have been virtually ignored. This general neglect is particularly true of women living away from the HIV/AIDS epicenters. Using data collected in 1992-93, this paper examines the financial, physical, and emotional needs of 32 HIV-infected women living in southern Louisiana. These needs are then examined against the backdrop of the following psychosocial considerations: age, proximity to HIV/AIDS-related resources, ethnicity, disease progression, whether they have children living with them, and how they pay their bills (public vs. private). In addition, six feelings—sad, good, angry, scared, strong, and helpless—are explored. Implications for program development and counseling are discussed.
