Abstract

The author provides "two independent estimates of the minimum adequacy poverty line for a family of four [in the United States] over the period 1860-1909. Adjustments [are] estimated from late nineteenth-century data which enable the scaling of these poverty lines for families which differed in composition." The theoretical and methodological assumptions used in the analysis are outlined (EXCERPT)
