Commuting in the suburban zones of some cities of the Latvian SSR.

Abstract

Commuting patterns in seven cities of the Latvian SSR are analyzed on the basis of data collected at the time of the 1970 census and information gathered by geography students of Latvian University from the personnel departments of employers. The analysis covers Riga, the capital, with a population of 731,800 in the 1970 census, and six other cities in different size classes, down to Cesis with 17,700. The characteristics for which data have been compiled include the share of rural residents among commuters, the ratio of in-commuters (to the central city) to out-commuters, distribution of travel times, distribution by employment sectors, and various socio-demographic indices like age and sex distribution, place of birth and educational level.
