Providing Family-Centered Care in Maternal-Newborn Settings: A Case Study

Abstract

Family-centered care is a term that has been used to describe caregiving which involves close collaboration between family members and health care providers. The definition of family depends on the parent or parents’ own ideas about who constitutes their immediate family. Nurses must identify the members of the family and how they can be engaged into the care plan to fulfill the needs of the patient as well as family members’ needs. Also, nurses must identify, which family member will be the main collaborator with the health care team. In the maternal-child health care settings, the expected outcome is the delivery of high quality, safe care which will support the introduction of a new family member.
